Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois

By Kathleen H. Wheeler

Lincoln College philanthropist Bernard “Bernie” Behrends shares a passion for education espoused by the prominent gentleman for whom his hometown was named.  In his first political announcement in 1832, Abraham Lincoln wisely noted “Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting it, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people can be engaged in.”  In keeping with Lincoln’s sentiment, Bernie Behrends has devoted his personal time and financial resources to provide higher educational opportunities for those less fortunate in the community.

The Behrends philosophy of charity was instilled early in childhood through the teachings of the Lutheran Church.  Bernie and his older sister Anna were raised by their widowed mother and grandfather to help others when possible through service to their church and the public.   They were taught to view their contributions as a privilege that would ultimately strengthen society as a whole.  Blessed by success and prosperity as adults, Bernie and Anna have sustained these fundamental Christian principles through consistent and generous donations to their alma mater, Lincoln College, hoping the recipients of their charity will someday “pay it back” by helping others as well.

NOAA Science on a Sphere in Springfield, ILI had the extreme pleasure to preview a new technology and visual extravaganza recently at a local museum that is slated for opening later this fall. It was a project called Science on a Sphere, housed at the Land Surveyors Museum in downtown Springfield, Illinois, and developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA). To describe it is, well, impossible. Suffice it to say it changes – literally – your perspective on things like geography, astronomy, meteorology, land changes, migration, on and on. What struck me as I sat, uncharacteristically with a loss for words, while watching this amazing demonstration, was how lucky we are in this town to have the treasures we do. From the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, historic sites, museums, art and gift boutiques, and downright incredible locally owned and operated dining establishments, we are the keepers of great treasures! To dovetail onto the “Buy Local” theme, I would say let’s “Appreciate Local” and visit these treasures, spread the word, and get busy enjoying them!

You make the call, is the Diet Mountain Dew commercial featuring Abraham Lincoln as a stark raving mad wrestler great or is it disrespectful to our nation’s greatest President, the Great Emancipator who gave his life for his country?

Omni Communications Group Office, Springfield IllinoisThe southeast corner of the Old State Capitol Plaza in downtown Springfield, Illinois is the office location for Omni Communications Group.  The Omni building is historically significant because Abraham Lincoln wrote his presidential inaugural address in the upper levels of the building.  The recently renovated plaza is beautifully maintained year round and is conveniently located near the city’s government and business center and the downtown Abraham Lincoln historic attractions.  During the summer, vendors sell food on the plaza from carts and various “Artists on the Plaza” perform during the lunch hour for all the workers and tourists strolling and relaxing on the plaza.  It is a great place for the Omni staff to take a break and help find creative inspiration any time of year.
